AXËL WANTS TO GO WITH SARA
.
What is realism in contemporary art? In Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam’s novel „Axël“, the protagonist seeks his love Sara in a supernatural world. Since they exist in two different spheres, their love must remain unfulfilled. Dissatisfied with his life, Axël wants them both to commit suicide. When Sara suggests spending one last night together, he refuses. Axël fears this night could make them want to stay alive, which ultimately will show that their love - like any fulfilled dream - will fade and disappoint over time. He prefers the perfect illusion of imperfect reality. „Axël wants to go with Sara“ is part of a series of concept shows that constitutes an attempt of self-criticism of contemporary art. It pursues the essential questioning of the common sense prevailing in the contemporary art sphere as well as in its dominant phenomena.
