5-channel video installation: 8:45min
The project’s source material is the aria “Miserere” from Verdi’s opera *Il Trovatore*. It was rehearsed in collaboration with conductor and composer Gellért Szabó and eleven musicians, and then broken down into five distinct elements: the orchestra, the conductor, the choir, the soprano soloist, and the tenor soloist. Unannounced interventions took place in various social spaces involving the individuals representing each of these elements.
In the exhibition space, the separately filmed performances are subsequently recombined and presented as a multichannel video installation. Five projections of varying sizes, each with its own speaker and arranged in staggered depths, are scattered throughout the space. From the ideal, central vantage point, however, all the images come together like a mosaic—both visually and aurally—to form a cohesive whole.
.
The soprano suddenly begins to sing in a crowded job center waiting room; the four-piece orchestra intervenes in a supermarket next to the bottle return machine; the conductor leads the people reading and working in a public library; the choir abruptly takes over a church stage and sings in front of the congregation; and the tenor performs in the middle of a pigsty, much to the surprise of the animals. Verdi’s musical grandeur stands in contrast to the unsettling social situations of our present day; in this way, “re:miserere” conveys a unique, productive tension. All videos are filmed from a perspective that creates visual lines of sight between the protagonists on screen that extend beyond the edges of the projection.
